The 2025 Ban on PFAS Foam Fire Extinguishers: What UK Businesses Need to Know

Fire safety regulations in the UK are evolving, and one of the biggest changes in 2025 is the ban on certain foam fire extinguishers containing PFAS chemicals. If your business still relies on AFFF foam extinguishers, this update directly affects you.

At Daywatch, we keep businesses up to date with the latest compliance requirements — and we’re here to help you navigate these changes smoothly.

What’s Changed?

From 4th July 2025, extinguishers containing PFOA (a type of PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals”) are now banned under UK REACH regulations. These extinguishers were traditionally used for tackling liquid fires (Class B), but research has shown that PFAS pose significant environmental and health risks.

Key changes include:

  • PFOA Foam Ban – Extinguishers containing older C8-based foams are no longer permitted.

  • Review Required – Businesses must check whether their AFFF extinguishers are compliant. Even some newer C6-based foams may be restricted in the future.

  • Proper Disposal – Old extinguishers containing PFAS must be disposed of safely through licensed waste contractors.

  • Approved Alternatives – Fluorine-free foams, water mist extinguishers, CO₂, and other sustainable options are now widely available.

What This Means for Your Business

  • Fire Risk Assessments Must Be Updated: If your fire extinguishers change, your risk assessments need reviewing.

  • Training Needs Adjusting: Staff must understand how to operate the new extinguishers effectively.

  • Budget for Replacement & Disposal: Safe disposal of banned extinguishers may involve additional costs — it’s best to plan ahead.

  • Demonstrate Compliance: Being proactive with updates not only keeps you compliant but also shows commitment to safety and sustainability.
